INSPIRE at Cedars-Sinai
Inspiring New Scientists through Professional Internships and Research Experience (INSPIRE) is a summer program at Cedars-Sinai designed to introduce current students and recent graduates to research in a healthcare setting through hands-on training and virtual workshops.
Students can participate in INSPIRE Internships (on-site) or INSPIRE Online. Information about the program, hosting an inspire intern, student applications and program timelines can be found below.
INSPIRE Internships
INSPIRE Internships are 6- to 10-week paid internships on-site at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Mentored by Cedars-Sinai faculty, INSPIRE interns are exposed to a diverse spectrum of leading-edge technology in multiple disciplines and projects related to basic, translational or clinical research. Internship training aspects may include the following research fundamentals:
- Principles of the research process (clinical, bench or translational research)
- Safety regulations for working in laboratory and research areas
- Appropriate use of protected health information (PHI)
- Research study design and hypothesis development
- Data collection and analysis
- Scientific literature review process
- Methods for writing an abstract, including endnotes and source citing
- Research discussions and presentation skills (lab meetings, journal clubs)
In addition to research activities, INSPIRE interns will be invited to attend workshops focused on skill-building, networking and career exploration. They will also have the opportunity to speak and present at the annual Poster Day symposium (dependent on COVID-19).
There are two INSPIRE Internship tracks for summer 2022:
- INSPIRE High School
- Summer internships for high school students (16+)
- INSPIRE Future Generations
- Summer internships for current undergraduate students or recent graduates who are from backgrounds that are underrepresented in medicine, healthcare and research. This includes, but is not limited to: Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC); women; low-income; first-generation; LGBTQIA+; persons with disabilities and protected veterans.

Eligible students who apply to the program but are not accepted will be invited to join INSPIRE Online.
INSPIRE Online
INSPIRE Online is a weeklong unpaid virtual program for high school students, college students and recent graduates. During this week, students will hear from Cedars-Sinai faculty and staff about:
- The importance of research in healthcare
- Career pathways in research and healthcare
- Research best practices
- Hot topics in research and medicine
Students who successfully complete the INSPIRE Online program will receive a Certificate of Completion.
