Cedars-Sinai Academics was an integral part of the institution from its earliest days, with 65 residents enrolled in graduate medical education (GME) residency programs at what was then Cedars of Lebanon in 1962. Today, academics at Cedars-Sinai comprises GME, continuing medical education (CME), technology transfer and the Burns and Allen Research Institute.

Biomedical research and education are essential, integral components of the institution’s mission, enabling sustained peer-reviewed biomedical research, translational research discoveries that impact patient care and education of research professionals at all levels of their careers. We seek to:

Our Education Programs
Cedars-Sinai has a variety of nationally-recognized degree and non-degree education programs designed to serve the needs of students at every stage of exploration. These programs are produced by eminent faculty and offer unrivaled opportunities for clinical study.
GME remains a cornerstone of academics at Cedars-Sinai. In 2019, there were 300 residents in 14 residency programs, 134 fellows in 78 fellowship programs and 897 medical student rotations from UCLA and other institutions.
The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, founded in 2008, has been accredited since 2012 by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission. To date, the PhD program in Biomedical Sciences graduated 38 students from 7 classes, while 14 students completed the Master’s Program in Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and 30 completed the Master's Program in Health Delivery Sciences. An additional 11 students completed the Clinical Scholars program enabling clinicians to hone their interests in clinical research.
CME at Cedars-Sinai, accredited with commendation from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) for 25 years, has provided approximately 1,700 hours of education to more than 25,000 professionals across Cedars-Sinai. Healthcare professionals at Cedars-Sinai have logged more than 75,000 learner contact hours at the Women’s Guild Simulation Center for Advanced Clinical Skills, which provides an immersive experience designed to foster clinical skills development and team-based communication.
Breakthrough Research and Technological Innovations
Complementing the clinically focused education, Cedars-Sinai operates one of the largest research programs among private hospitals in the country, ranking among the top 10 non-university hospitals in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 2019, Cedars-Sinai's more than 800 research staff, 320 principal investigators, 143 postdocs and 191 research interns contributed to 2,600 publications and 1,700 IRB-certified studies. Since 2017, more than 150,000 square feet of space housing new labs and institutes has been added to the Cedars-Sinai research footprint.
Clinical Research to Patient Care
An average week at Cedars-Sinai sees 1,000 hospital admissions, 2,000 visits to the Emergency Department and 15,000 outpatient visits. Patients undergo 635 surgical procedures, including 10 organ transplants, as well as 134 obstetric deliveries and 6,350 diagnostic imaging studies and procedures.
In 2019, this translated into 50,646 hospital admissions for a total of 269,011 patient days, including admissions for 523 solid organ transplants, plus 91,014 Emergency Department and 802,354 outpatient visits.
